Port pirie is the 6th most crowded city in South Australia after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Murray Bridge and Port Lincoln. It is a seaport on the east shoreline of the Spencer Gulf, 223 km (139 mi) north of Adelaide. At June 2015 Port pirie had an expected urban populace of 14,247.

Before European settlement, the area that ended up Port pirie was involved by the indigenous clan of Nukunu. The area was called 'Tarparrie', which is suspected to signify "Sloppy Creek". The primary European to see the area was Matthew Flinders in 1802 as he investigated the Spencer Gulf by pontoon. The primary land disclosure by pilgrims of the area was by the adventurer Edward Eyre who investigated areas around Port Augusta. John Horrocks likewise found a go through the Flinders Ranges to the drift, now named Horrocks Pass.

The town was initially called Samuel's Creek after the revelation of Muddy Creek by Samuel Germein. In 1846, Port pirie Creek was named by Governor Robe after the John Pirie, the primary vessel to explore the stream while transporting sheep from Bowman's Run close Crystal Brook. In 1848, Matthew Smith and Emanuel Solomon purchased 85 sections of land (34 ha) and subdivided it as a township to be known as Port Pirie. Little improvement happened nearby and by the late 1860s there were just three woolsheds on the riverfront.
